Bye-Bye, Beige

A few years ago, I took my daughter to Seoul, South Korea, as a high school graduation gift. We loved every minute of it, but let’s be real: We were stared at, asked if we were celebrities, asked to pose for pictures and touched on our arms (we drew the line at touching our hair).
Besides the fascination with our skin color, I noticed something else. I was the only one wearing anything besides beige, white or black. It was summer, so I was rocking my orange. I broke out the pink. The royal blue. Seems like I was the only one.
Because I was one of the few Black women there.

We’ve never been afraid of color. From our cars to our outfits to our makeup and nails, we live boldly and unapologetically in full color.
We hold our organizations dear and embrace the colors affiliated with them. Pink and green? Check. Pink and blue? Yep. Crimson and cream? Definitely. All-white parties? Nice.
From the Divine 9 to Jack and Jill to Easter Sunday, we have always embraced color. Our homes are no different.
Who could forget the ’90s trend of black, gold and glass tables?
So this recent trend of white kitchens skipped over us. Gray and beige everywhere? Take that somewhere else.
We live in full technicolor — our throw pillows, our walls, our artwork, our Le Creuset, our plates, our chairs. It’s unapologetic. It’s bold. It’s us.
